Really nice base but really small. The base does have a Commissary and a PX, just probably a little smaller that you are used to. (coming from Ft. Bragg, alot smaller than what you are used to!) The Commissary also has very limited hours and is closed on Mondays! There is a bowling alley, movie theater, MWR trips, dry cleaner and most of the staples here on base. As mentioned, there is no clothing sales but I have heard they are getting one in the next couple of months.
The clinic on base is very nice and in my opinion, better than some of the others I have seen. The peadiatrician is very good as well as the other doctors.
Housing is great if your permanent party and not a student at the USAWC. Being permanent party we were lucky enough to live in a brand new house. They are also tearing down houses and building new ones all over base, so soon enough, most of the houses will all be new.
The area is really nice. As mentioned you are pretty close to alot of major cities and can do day trips. DC and Philadelphia are both abour exactly 2 hrs away. Pittsburgh is a little over 3 hrs. Harrisburg is only about 20 minutes away. There are shopping centers all around and downtown Carlisle has plenty of small novelty shops as well as antique shops. In the summer there are car shows every weekend and on Pomfret St. they have live music every Saturday. There are a few arts festivals that happen downtown. The Barracks also sponsor a few events as well such as the Market at Washingtonburg, Jim Thorpe Days, and Oktoberfest. They are all family freindly. Lancaster is about an hour away and there is plenty to see in that area. There are also a few ski resorts in the area. The Poconos are about 2 hrs away and is a nice getaway.
The base revolves around the US Army War College and probably about 85% of people living on base are COL?「どィび「s (or LTC?「どィび「s) and their families. With that being said there is really nothing done that pertains to enlisted families. It is not your typical base where you get to know your husbands unit and the families very well. For us, we have had to make a great effort to get to know people. It seems that a lot of people here keep to themselves. It would be nice if there were things done for enlisted families or they were included in some of the activities that go on around base.
If you are looking for a job on or around base, there are some government opportunities. There is a naval base in Mechanicsburg which is nearby, a depot near Harrisburg, as well as Letterkenny and FIG. The USAWC also provides some employment. I would visit the CPAC office here on base and enroll in priority placement if looking.
Overall it?「どィび「s a nice base, just requires a little extra effort on the social side of things!
