I have a non-military friend that lives in Huachuca City she also lived & worked in Sierra Vista for a while after getting married. She moved there during her 6th grade year she hated the high school but never complained about the middle school/junior high. She was able to graduate after her junior year if that helps anyone feel better. Sierra Vista offers quite a bit of shopping & entertainment I think Tucson is about an hour away Phoenix is 2-3 hours away so if the area's not exciting enough for you more options aren't extremely far away. If your a western fan Tombstone is also close by.

Christina B says: There are 3 schools on post. K-2 3-5 & 6-8. My experience with the schools has been AWESOME! the teachers are all really nice & helpful. The office staff is sweet!

....... If you have a high school student they would either goto Buena High in Sierra Vista or Tombstones High School. I recommend Tombstone. Our daughter went to Buena her senior year & she hated it. Too many trouble makers drugs & pregnancies. Everyone I know who has a high schooler sends them to Tombstone.......... There are a few daycares on post too but I don't know anything about them........... There is Cochise College in Sierra Vista & Southern Campus of University of Arizona. There is an education building on post that offers some classes through Cochise College. Not sure if its just for Military or if spouse can utilize those services too.

Christina B says about OFF POST HOUSING:Not really sure other than its expensive! Our BAH wouldn't cover a house so we would be stuck in a small 2 bedroom appartment.

Christina B says: About ON POST Housing I love our housing! I think its a great size. My only complaint is the tile floors. We don't have carpet but some of the upper enlisted & old post housing does. Its really hard to keep the floors clean I suggest investing in a steam mop! Have had no problems with housing themselves. They have come to fix a few things that needed attention in a timely manner & they have always been nice & professional.

There are not a lot of things to do for kids in Sierra Vista. They have a main park in town Veteran?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Memorial Park on Fry Blvd. They have playgrounds, skateboard area, sandbox, lots of grassy areas for kids to run & play, have sports activities there on weekends, show movies & always have something for families there on weekends during the summer, fall, & spring.
There?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s also the Cove which is located in Veterans Memorial park. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s an indoor swimming area for families/kids. http://www.ci.sierra-vista.az.us/cms1/index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=25&Itemid=316
They have open swim times for everyone. Also on Saturdays & Sundays they have Splash Time from 9:30 ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú 11:30 for children 5 and under. No older kids are allowed. This is a great time for the little ones to enjoy splash time without the huge waves & they get free rein on the pool areas. We took my 14 month old & she absolutely ?¢‚Ñ¢¬•ed it! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s $3 for 1 child+1 adult. For every adult after it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s .50 cents a piece. On post there is a playground in every neighborhood about every 2-3 blocks. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s very nice for families to be able to walk out their backdoor & walk straight to the playground. Lots of sidewalks for strollers & afternoon walks. There are a couple of playdate facebook groups that you can check out. http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=233426488345&ref=ts
You can also do a general search on facebook for fort huachuca playgroups or sierra vista playgroups.

Housing on installation?

We live in brand-new housing in DeAnza Village. We have a spacious 3 bedroom house. Tile throughout the house, except the bedrooms?¢‚Ǩ¬¶granite countertops in the kitchen, all new appliances?¢‚Ǩ¬¶it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s super nice. This is the nicest house I have ever lived in. The housing and maintenance folks are really professional and helpful. We did not have a wait time for housing once we got here. We got here, had an appointment already set up and got our keys. I had submitted our paperwork months in advance, so I am guessing that helped.

Housing off installation? There is NO traffic in Sierra Vista. I do not know much about housing or apartments in Sierra Vista. I have heard that it is a bit expensive for what you get off post, but I cannot speak from experience.

Post Housing is nice. They just got done building lots of new houses. Still have some older housing they use for students with families here for AIT/BOLC. They are phasing out those houses & plan to tear down the last neighborhood of those in 2011. The Housing office is on Smith St beside the chapel parking lot. Their phone number is (520)515-9000 and website is http://www.mountainvistacommunities.com/ .
Off post housing is nice if you get the right neighborhood. Most houses on Coronado Dr are very nice. Also newer housing. There are quite a few nice neighborhoods off from Buffalo Soldier Trail (road that runs parallel to Ft Huachuca). Some of those streets are Avenida Cochise & Cherokee Ave, St Andrews Dr.
