I would recommend living off post as well. We live in Northeast Columbia and have access to everything we need (grocery stores, Target, retail like the outdoor mall in Sandhill, plenty of restaurants and entertainment for kids, etc.) We’re about 15-20 minutes from Ft. Jackson and the rental prices in the area are really reasonable and should be easily be covered by your BAH. We also like living off post because my husband spends soooo much time at work it’s nice for him to have some time away from Ft. Jackson when he can get it!

Housing off installation?
The Northeast side of town is nice. Polo and Clemson Rd areas are not far from downtown and are also in a great school district if you live off post.

The new housing on the post is nice, but I really would suggest to go off post. Many things are going on right now in Columbia and many nice houses and apartments are built around here. The prices are OK, as well. We live downtown Columbia because I like to walk allot, drink coffee at Starbucks, check out Vista and Five Point.

Now with the economic crisis you can rent really nice houses in Shandon and Rosewood, the two neat inner suburbs of Columbia. That wasn’t the case when we first came here. Anyway, go off the post, this is my advice. Columbia isn’t a groovy town, but you can do many cool things.

So far housing is great. I have not had a problem with the staff or maintance. We were able to get a house the day we got to Fort Jackson. We were showed 4 homes before being able to sign a lease.

There are many new homes being built for both officers and enlisted. At first we were giving older housing. we stayed in the unit for about 2 months. before it came up on the demo list. It was just not fun. I didn’t not like it one bit. Too many ants,no lights in the bedrooms. we had 1 main bathroom. The laundry room was with the half bath and very small kitchen.

The newer homes are pretty nice. We are Sr. Enlisted and it’s great. Open kitchen big living areas. the bedrooms are big. Love the walk in closet in the master bedroom.

Housing office has a program called Lifeworks and it’s great. program is all about wellness—feeling well in body and mind. We created this unique wellness program to help our residents and their families develop and maintain healthy bodies and minds.

Housing also host many different activites for residents living on post. you can also rent a community room in the housing bulidng for small get togethers.

Big plus for those with children are the parks in all housing areas. http://www.ftjacksonfamilyhousing.com/defaultFamily.aspx?cid=29
