Katie R. says: Fort Lee base housing is really nice. If you want to live off base Chester is the place you want to live but it can get pricy....

We found a new apartment complex that was really nice. Addison Crater Woods. They cater to military families and incoming students here for training.

On-post housing is available to families PCS?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ing for school, even if it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s just for 6 months. Just call or email the representatives at Pinnacle Family Housing. You can submit an advanced application online through their website
http://www.lee.pinnaclefamilyhousing.com/ Your eligibility for the waitlist equals the day you submit all of your paperwork ( for us we submitted everything in Nov and weren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t PCS?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ing until May. so our eligibility date was november).

We ended up renting off-post because nothing was available for about 2 months after we got here and we are only here for 6 months. Most people told us to stay away from Petersburg and parts of Hopewell. We ended up renting in an apartment community in Prince George only 2 miles form one of the Fort Lee gates. There are ALOT of luxury type apartments in the area. SOme are fairly close while others are farther away in Chester. Most of these places are kinda pricey.

Before you move definitely do your research on the area. Contact Relocation Readiness and they will mail you a welcome packet with a Fort Lee directory and other local information. The actual Housing office (not pinnacle family housing) just told me to look on http://www.ahrn.com for off-post rentals. Also utilize google and yahoo to search for apartments even if it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s just the names of places for you to look at when you get here. We ended up looking at about 3 or 4 places before we found the place we wanted to rent.

If you own pets, most places (not all) charge a non-refundable pet deposit as well as a monthly pet rent. We got lucky and only had to pay a pet deposit. So do your research so you don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t end up wasting money.

When renting off-post try to find someone that is military friendly and includes a military clause. Check facebook, there is a spouse?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s group called ?¢‚Ǩ?ìfort lee area spouse?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s club?¢‚Ǩ¬ù and many of the spouses there have lived in the area for awhile and can provide more in depth information on areas to live.

Off Post: A bit far away from Petersburg, but FYI: Woodbridge, Alexandria, Springfield, Lorton have great areas to buy in. Schools in Chester, about 20 mins away, but rents are higher accordingly. A big problem we had when we rented, and a problem you will find in most other military locations is that the rents equal your BAH so you end up not saving much money.
Find some good areas in Colonial Heights (do your research) and Prince George is a good area. I would not consider St.Petersburg at all for living.
Other spouses liked very renting at Armistead and LaSalle, but not the King Street area.
On Post: There is new housing on post, and moving into a new home is nice sized and spacious and however some things started falling apart quickly showing the hurry in which the houses were put together.. I have heard that from several spouses as well. Seems that spouses actually preferred the 1970?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s home vs. the newer built home. Take a look at current waiting times via the link that I have provided below. Basic Allowance For Housing (BAH)
Your BAH will be used in one of two ways. You can either rent on post or you can live off post. If you live off post, you can either rent or buy. Click Here for current BAH rates.

My husband and I are headed to Fort Lee, VA in August! We plan on living off base and I was just curious as to what the closest and nicest town outside of Ft. Lee would be? We have not received our orders yet so as of now we will only be in VA for 4 months as he continues his training. If you could please give me some in site I would appreciate it. Thanks!
