We are headed to Lewis from Oahu in January 2014. This is our first PCS so we are a little anxious. My husband is an E4 we do not have any kids would you recommend living on or off of post? I looked at a few places on zillow.com and everything looks so small and run down for $1300.00. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Carolyn L. says: Left Ft. Leavenworth for Ft. Lewis. I'm from KS and my husband is from WA. We had family close in both states. Love the weather in KS more but winter is milder in WA IF you don't mind the rain. Schools are good in both places. Husband had more time for family in KS than in WA. Cost of living is higher in WA but there's soooo much to do!

Jessica L. says: Your best bet for housing around the Ft. Lewis area is Lacey Dupont or University Place. Try to stay away from Spanaway Lakewood & South Tacoma.

Rachel J. asks: Hello! We're PCSing to Ft. Lewis (from Germany) any tips on where to live off post? We found a couple places online but neither of us are familiar with the area! TIA!

Damon A. says: The city of Dupont is nice lots of townhomes/condos etc.

Stephanie S. says: We just came to germany FROM fort lewis...DO NOT live in Lakewood or Tacoma.  University Place was best place i think..we lived in university place for 3 years :D

Tamara L. says: I would look in Lacey Yelm Olympia Puyallup and Dupont.

Paula H. saysa: Lots of good places! Depends on what you're looking for... Avoid Tillacoom but Lacey Steilacoom Oakbrook(its a nice neighborhood in lakewood) and university place are nice! I grew up around there and love it!

Jazzma G. says: We came from Germany to Lewis in Aug. as well if you have children that are in elementary school I would suggest DuPont. The schools in this are aren't very good and its the best in the area. Most rate a 3-5 on great schools and Chloe Clark is a 9. DuPont is literally minutes from base no matter the traffic on I5 (which is horrendous) I'd stay away from Lakewood (Lakehood) some places are nice but pretty far out IMO... you can look on Ahrn.com we found our house here while we were still in Germany there.

Lisa V. says: Bought a house in Spanaway. Great area great schools and close to post.

Robin G. says: I live in Yelm alot of military live out here that go to Fort Lewis. When you come here you here JBLM (Joint base Lewis McChord) that is what it is called now. Yelm is 30 minutes from post not too expensive to live in... DUPONT(expensive) but right outside of post. Steillacoom-nice little expensive just depends on where you live. Lakewood umm..ya stay away from there. Lacey is nice and just like Yelm cheaper than most places. If you any breed of dog being specific Pit Bull and German Shepards Rots Great Danes. I am being Speciific because Washington has a strick law when it comes to PIT BULLS especially! I know because i own a pit bull and we have to live in Yelm because No where else would have taken us. I can give you my Landlord name so you can call her and she can see what open properties she has. She is awesome. If you want the info please message me on Facebook :)

Stefanie C. says: I agree. University place.

Robin G. says: I personally wouldnt live NORTH of JBLM because the traffic on a daily basis leaving post is ridiculous!...

Paula H. says: While the military moved me I kept my house in University Place! Love it there!!

Samantha B. says: We live in Lacey and really like the area :)

Natalia L. says: We lived in puyallup and loved it..the pros there's a really nice mall plus things to do in the area..cons the traffic is a pain..where ever you choose Washington is beautiful and there are tons of things to do! I wish we could move back lol

Rachel J. says: Thank you everyone I really appreciate it! We need all the info we can get!

Dawn B. says: DuPont is close to post which is great because traffic is horrible.

Kimberly D. says: We lived in Yelm for 5 yrs and loved the small town feel. We have 3 boys 15 11 and 9 and they were always busy with activities. You also can get a lot more for your money out there.

Bri W. says: Dupont is nice and kind of small right outside of base so a quick hop skip & a jump away from post but it is pricey. We are a family of 7 and even a 3brdm 1800sqft was out of our price range by A LOT! We looked in Lacey and it is nice and pretty close to base as well. Just hop on the highway. Most people want to avoid I-5 though because of traffic at rush hours. Lacey can also be a bit higher priced if you need more space (like we do). I do not care for the Spanaway area and the road that leads to post is often crowded. I avoid that strip at all costs. Yelm/Roy/Ranier/McKenna are nice little towns off the backside of post. It takes about 25-30 min to get to post from here. Roy/McKenna are closer but Yelm has the shopping/restaurants/movie theater. There isn't much to do in Yelm but we do have quite a few restaurants a Safeway a Walmart and a movie theater. It takes about 25min to get to Lacey too where there is more shopping. I also do not recommend north of base. South of base seems to be the nicer side IMO. Schools in Yelm are pretty good. That was one of the things I looked at when we were deciding where to live. Our choices were narrowed down to Lacey or Yelm when Dupont proved to not be financially feasible.

Rachel A. says: We live in Graham which is about 30 mins away. We are far enough out not to encounter too much traffic but close enough to be convenient. Good luck!

Grace B. says: We lived in Lacey and enjoyed it but if you want to go to Seattle a lot you may want to be farther north.

Sarah C. says: We're moving to WA the 8th next month n we have a pitbull. It's only me n my husband do we're getting an apt in Lacey.

April S. says: Lacey!!! It takes my husband 20 minutes from getting in the car to getting out of the car. The traffic going south on I5 is nothing compared to going north. When we were looking for places We drove to the Tacoma area where we were looking at a few houses and it took 45 minutes to get there.

Dupont is nice. However many do not have fenced yards. I am not saying that there are not any but there are not many. Also you will pay just as much in Dupont as you would to stay on base.

Steillacoom is nice but the traffic getting there is a royal pain. Unless you go through Lakewood (which I would not recommend living in) you have to go out a gate that everyone else is trying to go out at the same time. We looked at a place there and it was a 2 bedroom 1 bath place for 1500 because out one window you had a sliver of a view of the sound.

We are renting a 2000 sqft house in Lacey for 1450. The AHRN website was awesome in helping find a place. Another thing that helped was finding a property management company to go through. If any problem comes up we call them not a landlord that may wait a week or two to call you back. We go through Dupont Realty (http://realtydupont.com/).

Good luck on your move.

Keesha M. says: I would suggest Dupont hands down.. Been station there on and off for 10 years. If you have children you'll enjoy Ft Lewis.. :)

Danielle F. asks: I'm looking for info on Ft.Lewis and MacDill AFB. We have four kids 12 11 6 and 3. Thanks.

Robin D. says: What kind of INFO on Fort Lewis?.. (FORT LEWIS Is now called Joint base Lewis McChord JBLM)

Danielle F. says: What areas off post to live in or avoid best schools cheer gyms in the area rec sports leagues cost of living average utility costs etc :)

Mona S. says: We live on JBLM (Fort Lewis) and really like it! We chose to live on base cause hubbys work schedule is crazy! But there are lots of our friends that live off base. Roy yelmlacey and olympia are the towns they live in. I am not sure of the youth activities but I know my friends love Yelm and the schools too!

Meagan W. says: Education is very lacking in Washington we live on base on the McChord side which is nicer and quieter than Lewis many places on post have had an increase in criminal activity if u want off post avoid lakewood its expensive and ghetto try for spanaway or yelm you can commute with out getting on interstate 5 and its more.reasonable. if u want on post I suggest McChord housing or discovery village which is new on north fort but there's a waiting list. Cyss offers cheer programs through their skies unlimited program along with tons of other stuff.

Paula H. says: We lived in University Place and loved it!! We kept our house so we could move back. We liked the university place schools and there were lots of sports gym ect....but my kid was only interested in tae kwon do and soccer. A lot of her friends went to cheer camp but I don't know much else about that. Depending on where you're from the cost of living is high!

I'm born and raised in the area (my dad retired at ft Lewis) so it seemed ok to me but my husband was shocked at how high it was! Lol. There's lots to do and see all around but it is true about the gray weather ;) if you like oceans mountains waterfalls hiking this could be the place for you! Schools everywhere are terrible now! Yikes! My oldest is 13 and every year everywhere we go it gets worse and worse! Even schools with good ratings stink!!!! Mine are now in "one of the best" and very highly rated school in our new state....and it is by far the worst! They don't want failures so they don't give homework. According to a teacher there the kids might not do the work so they simply don't give it! Ugh!

Robin G. says: I live in Yelm its about 30 minutes from post. Its pretty quiet out here and thats why we live so far out. I choose not to live on post and i hear ya about the crazy schedules. I like yelm's school district. A lot of the schools here in washington are not graded very well. this past year when school started Tacoma didnt school for a week (I think)...the teacher where on strike because of the pay...but who knows what they were arguing about.

Dawn B says: Dupont is a great area and close enough to post you don't have to get on the highway.  Chloe Clark is the elementary school there in the neighborhood.

Jazzma G. says:  the schools here are notoriously bad... there are only two schools in the area that score well one is on base and the other is Chloe Clark in DuPont... if your looking off base I would highly suggest DuPont its small quiet and family friendly. There is hardly any thru traffic and and it doesnt have the crime of say Lakewood... we're really close to base and dont even have to use I5.. traffic is horrible if you live South of the base...

Marci S. says:  We live on post and love it.  My son goes to Evergreen school.  It seems okay but don't know much about test scores.

I absolutely LOVE JBLM! My husband is Army and we moved up here in December (but I lived up here 1995-1998 with my dad). To me the weather isn't as bad as people make it out to be. The thing I love is there are so many things to do within an hour drive - Seattle Portland Mount Rainier Mount St. Helen and so on.

We moved in Northwest Landing which is in Dupont - http://www.nwlandingroa.org/outside_home.asp. The best thing is he doesn't even have to get on I-5 to get to work.....traffic is horrible around post during the week he is able to use the back gates. They are buiding a lot of new housing on main post and north Fort. I do think housing goes pretty quickly so if you find out you are coming up get on the waiting list ASAP! The website is http://www.fortlewiscommunities.com

If Dupont nor post are options I would suggest Lacey. There are good schools in the area and the city is growing so much and they are building a lot of new houses. A website we used when looking for housing in the area is http://www.militarybyowner.com
