youve got to be out of your mind if you think JBLM (aka joint base lewis mcchord aka fort lewis) is the best duty station. the weather sucks. the locals suck. the traffic SUCKS. the units are GARBAGE and treat their soldiers like crap. forget this place avoid it like the plague. its the #1 base for suicides for a reason. the base is notorious for using its soldiers and discarding them like trash. the hospital on base is under investigation for screwing over thousands of soldiers with all sorts of different issues - and the reason why? to save money. its already been admitted.

if you like getting to work when its dark then leaving for home when its dark go here. If you like being rained on with freezing cold rain by all means. if you like spending an hour in traffic any time you go anywhere near the base come here. if you like a bunch of unhelpful civilians and "army services" go here. if you like random vehicle searches ever other time you go on base go here. if you like having to carry a copy of your orders les erb dog tags proof of insurance etc everywhere you go just to get any form of help go here.

Bonnie H. says: My husband's first duty station was Ft. Campbell and he *loved* it there. We've been to Benning Germany and now we're at Ft. Lewis.

So far I absolutely love this area! The cost of living is kind of high but the BAH makes up for it. For what *we* needed it was cheaper for us to buy then rent off post (but I don't like living on post). Seattle is less then an hour from here and Portland is about 2 hours south of here.

I absolutely LOVE JBLM! My husband is Army and we moved up here in December (but I lived up here 1995-1998 with my dad). To me the weather isn't as bad as people make it out to be. The thing I love is there are so many things to do within an hour drive - Seattle Portland Mount Rainier Mount St. Helen and so on.

We moved in Northwest Landing which is in Dupont - http://www.nwlandingroa.org/outside_home.asp. The best thing is he doesn't even have to get on I-5 to get to work.....traffic is horrible around post during the week he is able to use the back gates. They are buiding a lot of new housing on main post and north Fort. I do think housing goes pretty quickly so if you find out you are coming up get on the waiting list ASAP! The website is http://www.fortlewiscommunities.com

If Dupont nor post are options I would suggest Lacey. There are good schools in the area and the city is growing so much and they are building a lot of new houses. A website we used when looking for housing in the area is http://www.militarybyowner.com

My family will be moving to Fort lewis after being in Florida for 16 years. I have an 18 year old girl, a 6 year old boys and almost two year twins-boy and girl. How cold is it really up there? My husband lived in London before we met and he loves cool weather but me not so much. I am looking forward to moving to a new place but I am so scared of moving so far away from all my family?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.

It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s not that it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s that cold ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú just wet. If you can deal with that then you are golden! We had a few cold weeks this past winter but then we remained in the 40?¢‚Ǩ¬?s during the day. Not many extremes. The summer is definitely the time to get out and get your Vitamin D load. I guess it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s like London. I would love for you to tell people about Florida, where you lived what you did. I bet you have a lot of information for us!

We move to Ft Lewis at the end of September this year. We are very excited. We are moving from Landstuhl, Germany and have been here for 8 years. We are ready to be back in the US. Any information on the area will help. We have two kitties that are moving with us. It is our first big move as a family. We are looking to rent a home in either Dupont or Lacey.

FlipCam GiveAways Submission ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú Camille D says Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington. We are Army, but live on the Air Force Side and like it. McChord has everything we need, so we don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t need to go over to Fort Lewis very often. The BX and Commissary are both big and great. The housing is very separated from any buildings, which makes it feel very private. The Tacoma/Seattle area has everything you could possibly ever want or need from museums to camping, hiking, beaches, malls etc.

I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m not sure what to comment except my husband just found out we will be going to JB Lewis-McChord this summer. I am just looking for any info. We have 3 special needs children and any info I could get would make moving a lot easier. We we just MEDEVACed from overseas last year due to our younger child?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s medical condition. This move is very unexpected and I would love some insight on the base and also any schools for nursing in the area. Thank you to all who respond.

Jo says: December 15, 2010 at 10:05 am We are currently at ft Lewis but about to pcs to Iowa when my husband finishes recruiting school. I have lived in washington all my life, about 15 or 20 minutes from post. If you are looking to live off post I would recommend south of post traffic is so much better. But if you move into the hawks prarie area, exit 111 off I5, becareful not to be too close to the mushroom farm, it smells awful! Other than the mushroom farm the Olympia/Lacey area is great it takes my husband 20 minutes to get to post. There are plenty of stores and resturants, great parks, and the chehalis trail for walking or bike riding. The neighborhoods to avoid would be Tanglewild and the meadows, they have some nice parts but some very bad parts too. Happy nails by target is a greats place for a pedicure and waxing. If you have pets Mt view vet is excellent, Lauren at petsmart for grooming, and northwind kennels for boarding. All the local schools are good they have built several new schools to make room for the growing population. Make sure to check out hands on childrens musuem if you have little ones. And be sure to check out the only rain forest in the continental states. And the most important thing to remember in Washington is you aren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t made of sugar and you wont?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t melt so get out there enjoy all the pacific northwest has to offer it wouldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t be so beautiful and green wihout all the rain.

Hi,
Well we are an Army family and we live on McChord because the housing wait was much shorter for us than Lewis. The housing here are mostly duplexs and 4 plexes. We got lucky and have a corner duplex 3 beds/2bath with la arge fenced yard. They also have models available to look out. Lewis does not have models anymore because they had to rent them out. Alot of people say the BX here is nicer than Lewis?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s PX. They have a little indoor playhouse near the food court also. There is not as much traffic here either. There are a lot of Army families living here as well. The things I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t like is the parks/playground equipment. I wish they could be updated. Lewis has some areas with nice playgrounds especially the splash park for summertime. Lewis also have more libraries and gyms.

I will say this upfront?¢‚Ǩ¬¶Do not go to the commissary or PX at least 3 days before payday or after on either McChord or Lewis. There are a lot of retired military/spouses in the area and it becomes very crowded and most of the time the day after payday they both run out of milk, eggs and sometimes bread. I recommend going the week in between pay days.
