Mandee H. asks: My husband is AD AF and he just assigned a guard base in Birmingham AL. This PCS is already going to be a little difficult for us because we're coming from overseas. I'm having a very hard time finding any information on the base. I'm really hoping to connect with someone that is active duty there or has a SO that is in the guard there. I'd love to pick someone's brain!!!

I forgot to mention a couple of things?「どィャカthe cost of living right around the base is terrible, but as you get farther out towards either Birmingham or Auburn you can find really affordable off-base housing. Even if you don?「どィび「t want to drive from B?「どィび「ham or Auburn (and I know people who do both, it?「どィび「s like an hour commute?「どィャカ), you can still get away from muggy Montgomery and see the sights on the weekends. Birmingham has a great conference/performing arts center called the BJCC that hosts big names like John Mayer and Carrie Underwood!! Auburn is a college town (well, B?「どィび「ham is too, I guess, with UAB downtown) so there are a lot of great places to shop and eat.

If you have kids, the area around Prattville/Millbrook supposedly has excellent schools. A lot of my friends had their kids in school there. Also, it?「どィび「s very suburban so you get your little brick house and fenced yard with 2.5 children and a dog :) Very quiet, and the kids were always riding their bikes around in our Millbrook neighborhood. Also there are a lot of retirees who live in Prattville/ Millbrook so it?「どィび「s a very quiet community.

Maxwell-Gunter is really 2 separate bases. Maxwell on the west side of Montgomery while Gunter is on the west side. Maxwell is mainly training base for officers while Gunter is mainly the PME schools for enlisted personnel. Each base has a few tenant organizations (Gunter has ESC which employees a majority of military personnel on Gunter). While Maxwell has all the new services (commissary, gym, etc) Gunter has a better neighbor outside the gates.

While stationed in the area, you are close to the Florida beaches and Atlanta is only 3 hours away. If you want to vacation in a relaxing place or wine & dine in style you have your dreams within an easy drive any weekend. Take advantage of the positive and deal with the negative like every base we go to!

Maxwell mainly revolves around the training schools there, although it does support some auxiliary missions (like an ROTC program at Camp Shelby, MS). There is not a whole lot to see or do on the base, although the old housing is really pretty and the air memorial park is definitely worth a walk-around.

I definitely agree with Eighmey?「どィび「s comment about the area?「どィび「s safety. Montgomery is a haven for local drug traffic, so use caution when driving onto the base. The surrounding area gets better the farther you get away from MAFB, but right around the main gates it is totally ghetto.

We were only there for ASBC, but the base is really nice and the Commissary is excellent! Definitely take advantage of using the base gym, which is in an old hanger. It has really nice locker rooms and the work out space is nice too. If you are ever embarrassed to work out in front of men there is a room just for women to work out in.

You are an hour south of Birmingham (which has great shopping!), 2 1/2 hours from Atlanta, and about 3 hours from the beach. A lot of people who live there head to Pensacola during the summer. Summers are VERY hot and muggy, but you really need to go to a Biscuits game (the minor league baseball team) when they have military appreciation nights. It is good cheap fun.

I will say that the area by the base is not exactly the best part of town, and do not recommend being out there after dark. Also, drivers in Montgomery are NUTS! When it is raining most people don?「どィび「t turn on their lights, and putting on a blinker is completely optional when deciding to merge into your lane. You really have to be an observant, defensive driver. Montgomery isn?「どィび「t a bad place to live, but sometimes it can seem very backwards and like you are living in a different time period.

Eghmey,

I am trying to decide whether or not I should go to Maxwell with my husband for ASBC. Would you recommend it? Also, how is the lodging facility they put you in for ASBC?
Thanks!
