Housing at Travis may have changed since we were stationed there. At the time they were building gorgeous new housing on-base and nothing was open. The wait list stretched into two YEARS to get onto base housing. If you can get it, go for it. Almost all of the base housing is new, gorgeous, and pretty. When I went to garage sales on-base, I would eye these places with envy!
Word to the wise: in general, base housing offices are not helpful. But at Travis, your first stop should be Base Housing. Because they have a very good list of apartments complexes NOT to live in and neighborhoods to AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Unfortunately that includes most of the local area. When we PCS’d to Travis, we rented from an apartment complex in Vacaville. River Oaks…an expensive rip-off. The fact that our next-door neighbors tried to kill each other one night didn’t help matters. Don’t rent apartments in the area if you can help it!
So we next moved into a neighborhood in Fairfield that was supposed to be safe. Well. Fairfield is run by gangs and they routinely patrolled our neighborhood. A lot of the gang activity from the Bay Area has filtered up to norcal and Fairfield is pretty much run by gangs and drugs. It’s really sad, if you think about it. The other sad thing that happened to this rental is that it got foreclosed on. BEWARE of the housing crisis in CA…my best friend at Travis had the same thing happen. Basically the owner of our rental home didn’t pay his mortgage and pocketed our rent. Then we got evicted when the bank put the house on the market. REALLY sucky.
Finally we found a condo for lease through a property manager with Century 21 in Fairfield. If you go through a property management company there’s a smaller chance that the home is in early stages of foreclosure. There’s a little neighborhood of condos right off the base and it worked really well for us. Also I would recommend investing in a good security system if you’re living off-base in Fairfield/Vacaville, just for peace of mind.
