There has been LONG waiting lists to get housing on post or with ?¢‚Ǩ?ìgovernment housing.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù Because of this, most people are forced to live off post through a private rental.

Everyone has their opinion on what is best, I personally wanted to live on post or in government housing because this is my first time living overseas, however, that was not an option and we really enjoy our home off post, and our German landlord lives right below us. People with pets often have been having problems though as many of the German landlords do not allow pets.

On post housing isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t very aesthetically pleasing on the outside, however, the insides seem to be well kept. Many houses recently have had new kitchens put in as well. There are German (220V) and American (110V) outlets in these homes, and most homes come with one or two transformers. I believe internet is included in these homes (however, I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m not sure about this) and the TV outlets have AFN access, so you do not need an AFN decoder box.

I recently drove through the Netzaburg government housing area, which I believe is the most recently built government housing and it was beautiful! A friend of mine lives in the Auerbach housing area and loves it. These homes have German (220 V) outlets only and usually come with a transformer or two. I am not sure how the AFN situation works in government housing, you may need to buy the decoder but I am not sure.

Like I said before, I live off post through a private rental. Obviously, all of our outlets are German 220 V so we have bought several transformers through the thrift shop, since the government does not provide us transformers. We had to purchase an AFN decoder and when we have maintenance problems we have to contact our landlord rather than the post maintenance. German homes do not seem to have storage! We have NO closets in our home so I have had to get creative. People should bring furniture with lots of storage if they can. Many German homes do come with an attic or basement for more ?¢‚Ǩ?ìpermanent?¢‚Ǩ¬ù storage, and garages (which my on post and government housing friends are jealous of!)
