The biggest draw-back to this base is that the public school option is the DC public school. It is one of the worst schools in the district which is one of the worst districts in the nation. There has been some talk of opening a base elementary school that would be a DC charter school. Almost all middle and high school students are either home schooled or go to private schools in Northern Virginia. There is a huge home school community on this base. You can also try for the DC charter school lottery which some have success with and some don't. If you send your children off-base to a private or a charter school they will be facing a long school bus ride both ways (unless you take them).

There are no schools onpost at HAAF. I do believe your child might be able to attend junior Kindergarten at the CYS but check on that. My daughter attended Pulaski Elementary outside the gate. Not exactly the best schools but we never had any problems there. I have heard there are some type of charter programs if you want your child to attend another school in another area.
