Camp Zama is a hidden gem in Japan located nearby to Tokyo. From Gate 4 one can reach Sobudai-Mae Train Station (on the Odakyu line) within 10 minutes and from there travel to Shinjuku Tokyo in 30-45 minutes; or the opposite direction to Odawara Castle or Enoshima Island in the same amount of time. Travel to Mt Fuji and Hakone Onsens are also easy and quick while at Camp Zama.

The US Army Camp is the headquarters for US Army Garrison Japan and is decently cared for. US amenities and food (to include Subway Popeyes and Taco Bell) are available for members and families. Fans of Golf may enjoy the 18 holes nestled into the installation; while the bowling alley suits others better. A movie theater is located on Sagamihara Housing (SHA) a 15-minute drive from Camp Zama.

Families may end up either on Camp Zama or SHA. Camp Zama features both standalone houses and high-rise apartment complexes while SHA consists of one and two-story housing. The train station Odakyu-Sagamihara is 15 minutes from SHA. The main Commissary is also located on SHA although there is a smaller Commissary located on Camp Zama. The vet is located on Camp Zama.

If Camp Zama does not have a US amenity that one cares for at the PX they can travel to NAF Atsugi located 25-35 minutes away to visit the NEX. Yokota AB features a large BX (Called the YCC) and is 45 minutes - 2 hours away depending on traffic. US Fleet Activities Yokosuka features a NEX larger than Atsugi and tends to have items that Yokota does not. Finally items may be ordered via the mail and delived to an APO address same as if in the US.

The main negative point to Camp Zama is that Mt Fuji is not visible from the installation due to the hill that Zama sits on as well as the hills to the west.

Leah M. says: We were in Camp Zama Japan for 3 years and it was amazing! You get into housing quick and the base is very family friendly.
