My husband was stationed in Columbus MS from Jan 2004-June 2006. The area is very rural. It's great if you enjoy getting out and exploring the South (my favorite thing to do is drive the Natchez Trace Parkway in the Spring) and lots of little local festivals. Other than that shopping eating out and entertainment are pretty slim. You are about an hour (maybe little less) from Tupelo MS or Tuscaloosa AL for a Mall and diverse eateries. All in all our stay in Columbus was nice but not one I would want to repeat :)

We?「どィび「ve only been here for a few months, so we are still getting familiar with the area, but so far it has been good. CAFB is located about 10 minutes north of Columbus. Base is fairly small, and the majority of the people here come for UPT(undergraduate pilot training). After you get here and in-process, you?「どィび「ll be on casual status for a while. During casual they have you check in during the morning and occasionally work odd jobs here and there, but nothing too much. Most go to ASBC and IFS before UPT starts. Right now they are bumping up everyone?「どィび「s UPT dates and skipping ASBC so casual is only for a month or two
Shopping and restaurants are pretty slim pickings in town, but they have the nicest K-Mart I have ever seen :) Tuscaloosa and Tupelo are both an hour away with a little more to offer.

The shoppette is really small as well as the BX, which they are remodeling. They are building a new CDC which is supposed to open this fall.

For pilot training families, they have a student spouse group to keep you in the loop of what?「どィび「s going on in the area, on base, and a way to meet other student spouses.

If you are into fishing there is a huge waterway just a few minutes away as well as a few other lakes.
