I am still in Alaska, fort wainwright. We should be PCSing at the end of 2012, thank goodness cause I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve been here TOO long! It seriously is a love it or hate it state. If you like the outdoors then it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a great place. There is a lot to do in terms of outdoors. Snow machining, skiing, snow boarding, sledding, hiking, fishing, hunting, Fairbanks has a bird observatory. And if you are into GeoCaching surprisingly we got that too (we do that in the summer time w/our kids)

In summer, locally there is Pioneer Park, Riverboat discovery, Goldmines as well as lots of hiking and biking trails. There is also a lake about 45 minutes south, called Birch Lake (military run) with cabins to rents as well as campsites. I definitely recommend doing some road trips as well to Valdez, Homer and Seward. All well worth the trip. In Winter you can go skiing, sledding, skidoo-ing and ice fishing. You can go to Chena Hot Springs (open in summer as well) and UAF Museum. There is a childrens museum in the works for Fairbanks. And the base has a great indoor playground in the community center!
