Housing always seems to be the first concern, questions and nightmare for a military family. On Elmendorf we have Aurora military housing which is a privatized housing development and offers several options. Unfortunately, as we all know in the military it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s first open, first come, first serve and you never know what you will get. There is from wow that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s bad don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t want to live there to that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s amazing I hope I get that. They offer two bedroom to four bedroom and the wait list can be long depending on what you need (children determines how many bedrooms).
What I can tell you is as soon as you get your assignment, wait for your orders. Then get ahold of housing to fax your orders (official paperwork) and the required application to get on the waitlist. This can help you get into housing faster and less of a wait in TLF.
Be aware some housing is on a meter for electricity. This can be scary. The allowance fluctuates, but here is the great thing! Each month, if you go under the allowance the difference is put into an account at housing. Once that account hits $250 they send YOU a check to do as you wish. Save electricity and get money!
The downside is if you go over you pay extra. :( No fun, so start practicing with yourself and your kids on ways to save electricity. Another shocker is some of housing REQUIRES you to have the basic cable package. You start an allotment on top of your housing allotment. This is NOT included in your BAH and is NOT an option for certain housing development. The plus side is it runs about $40 and is a huge savings. It gives you basic cable and your choice of a house phone with 100 long distance minutes or a cell phone. You pick.
To add onto your packages be aware GCI is a little more complicated than you may be use to. When you sign up for internet they will ask you how many hours you want. I was baffled, what do you mean how many hours? But I was relieved to find an unlimited high speed internet package. Then you can add on to your basic cable package. Remember, your allotment for basic cable set up through Aurora housing is NOT the same as your internet or add on packages through GCI. So you will have a total of three bills to pay. One the allotment required, second the internet if you want that, and third the additional cable packages beyond basic cable. Confusing yes, but the allotment cuts it down to two separate bills to pay. We put ours on automatic to cut down on dealing with remembering any of it.
