Housing on installation?

We lived in refurbished older housing which was adequate. Due to the removal of the aircraft from this base, many nicer houses are now available to those of lower rank. Each house has an ?¢‚ǨÀúarctic room?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ or family room/den which helps make up for the below-zero temperatures which keep families inside between January and March. Some housing has issues with flooding in the spring when the piles of snow melt. Sump pumps are running constantly for a few weeks until the ground thaws enough for water to soak in.

Housing off installation?

We were advised to live in-base and I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m glad we did. The commute is not awful, but I wouldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t want to do it every day. The highway between gf and base closes frequently due to blowing snow. Most houses in town have very small yards and are in close proximity to neighbors. Many apartment complexes house students and families affiliated with the university. For a small family, these would be great, especially since many have free heat during the winter. Many apartments do not have A/C either but all housing on base does. Honestly, between the annual flooding of the river and the cost if heating a home, I was very glad to be in base.
