When we first moved here in 2005 BAH was not enough to move off base. The next year BAH was raised around $500! We?「どィび「ve lived on base for 5 years, but it is pretty empty right now. With BAH at a good rate most people have moved off base. The housing is old, built in the 1950?「どィャ?s. A section of houses have been remodeled, updated cabinets, etc, but my house isn?「どィび「t one of them. The housing is not bad. The 3bed 2baths are about 1500 square feet. There?「どィび「s pretty good storage space, one covered carport. The 3rd bedroom is very small, really only suitable for a twin bed. In the 3 bedroom housing the backyards all have prickers, or stickers as they call them in the South. So the backyard is not play friendly. Most kids play in the road in the front of the houses. The 4bedrooms I have been in. They are larger but lacking the same character as the 3 bedrooms. The 3 bedrooms have vaulted ceilings and crown molding, not so for the 4 bedrooms. However, the 4 bedrooms have an extra living room, both bathrooms have bathtubs and showers, and the backyards do not have the prickers. There?「どィび「s some invisible line where the prickers stop. The 3 bedrooms are closer to the Sound. I have heard of flooding in the 4bedrooms. On the Soundside (across from HWY 98) There are SOQ houses and they are bigger and nicer. The highest ranks live on the water. The catch to the Soundside of town is during a potential hurricane they are the first to be evacuated.

A lot of people live off base in a town west of Hurlburt called Navarre. The houses are newer and you are apt to have garages versus a carport. The catch with Navarre is bad traffic to and from Hurlburt on the 2 lane HWY 98 with stop lights. Also, Navarre is in the Santa Rosa school district and the district is not as good as Okaloosa county. Fort Walton Beach has some rare finds, as does Mary Esther having newer homes with garages, but for the most part there are a lot of 3 bedroom 1 baths with carports. Older Florida homes, but they?「どィび「re solidly built and still standing after quite a few hurricanes! The best place to check for houses in the area is on Craig?「どィび「s list or realtor.com. A few rentals or houses for sale can be found on Hurlburtwarrior.com our base paper.
