Wilford Hall is beginning to move some of their units to Brooks Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston so you may have to drive over there for certain types of medical care. You are going to want to arrive at Wilford Hall at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment just so you can find a parking spot. If you are pregnant, get there even earlier because you will probably have to walk from the very back.

I found the OB/GYN care to be excellent. You can request to have a midwife or only see one Nurse Practitioner if you would like. I highly suggest that route. You can also be apart of a centering group, which would be a good idea for anyone who is having their first baby or is newly pregnant AND brand new to Lackland/Kelly. We thought the Labor/Delivery area was incredibly nice and didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have any problems. You are assigned one nurse the whole time you are laboring, and there are techs that do your IV/take your vitals. Some of those techs are in training. You are also initially checked by a resident before you see the doctor that will be delivering you. Just remember that it is a training facility for both the Army and Air Force medical units. Because I didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have any complications and our baby was fine they released me within 24 hours. Everyone was incredibly nice!

Now Pediatrics is a different story?¢‚Ǩ¬¶you rarely see the same doctor twice. They have a lot of civilian doctors that are, in my view, past their prime and are just working there to get a government retirement check. If you don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t see one of them, then you are pawned off on a resident. We have been seen by two excellent residents, but they are generally gun shy of children and have no idea what to do with you and your child. I have also found that we get treated nicer when my husband comes with us in uniform. You will see a lot of people in uniform meeting their spouses for check up at the peds clinic. I met one woman who had been waiting over 6 months to try and get tubes in her daughters ears. Her daughters ear drums had ruptured twice in that 6 month time span and the pediatrician was dragging his feet. The ER isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t any better, the wait time is ridiculous because they treat all of the trainees first, and then get to you. One resident told me I was dumb for asking him how we could prevent my son (who was 8 months old at the time) from getting pneumonia, and also proceeded to tell us that he had other more important patients to attend to.

For all military/spouse check ups you have to go to Kelly Clinic and in order to even get an appointment to any place you have to call the appointment line. Make sure your husband/wife tells you what ?¢‚Ǩ?ìteam?¢‚Ǩ¬ù you are on so you can make your appointment over at Kelly. Oh, and don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t bother calling the clinic directly, they will never answer the phone.
