Base activities:

This base is quite interesting since so much of it is for the USMA and the cadets. There are tons of sporting events going on here, all the time. Army football games are a religion here, lol. And even if you don?「どィび「t like football, attending a game at Miche (pronounced Mikey) stadium is something everyone should do at least once, as well as watching the Cadet Parades. The base itself is gorgeous. It?「どィび「s set right on a mountain, overlooking the Hudson River. The views are breathtaking, and there are trails to walk and hike. There are a lot of activities and events available on base. Even Balfour Beatty housing has several events each month for its residents. Here are some links of interest:

Things to do in the area:

This is a gorgeous area, with so much to see and do. The towns with more of the shopping and restaurants are a little farther away. Newburgh is about 15-20 minutes to the north of the base and Monroe/Central Valley is about 15-20 minutes to the Southwest. There are some great outlet malls in Central Valley. Middletown is about 45 minutes away and has a lot to offer. Take a drive along the Hudson to Cornwall/Cornwall on Hudson and see all the art galleries and small shops there are. Visit the west Point Museum and Visitors Center, of course. The town of Highland Falls, right outside of the Academy, has some quaint shops and restaurants to check out (and the only Mac Donald?「どィび「s with a value menu for miles, lol). We?「どィび「re not far from Bear Mountain, and since we?「どィび「re in the Tri- state area, New Jersey and Connecticut aren?「どィび「t too far away. And of course, there is New York City and all it has to offer. I?「どィび「;s less than an hour away, but I would recommend taking a bus or the train, as driving and parking in the city is insane.

Shopping:

Newburgh and Monroe/Central Valley have your basics, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Kohl?「どィび「s, Michael?「どィび「s, etc. Newburgh has a small mall, which is actually pretty nice and quiet during the weekday. Central Valley has an Outlet mall. Many of the Newburgh stores have police on duty at all the entrances (like Wal-mart) and just about everything you can think of is in those special anti-theft cases. It took some getting used to, to see that. I usually prefer shopping in Monroe/Central Valley most of the time. Right off of base, there isn?「どィび「t much in Highland Falls. A Rite-Aid is about it, and the closest grocery store is in New Windsor. Here?「どィび「s a link to some of the malls and shopping centers that are good in the area.
